John Wilson is a British conductor, arranger, and musical scholar who is known for his popular programs of light music, which he performs with his own ensemble, the John Wilson Orchestra. He was born in 1972 in Gateshead and fell in love with movie soundtracks as a Tyneside schoolboy. He taught himself to play the piano and later took up the percussion at school. He studied Music A level at Newcastle College and went on to study at the Royal College of Music as a percussionist, composer, and conductor. He founded the John Wilson Orchestra in 1994 at the age of 22. He conducts mostly hits from the Golden Age of Hollywood and has a soft spot for British music. He is a guest conductor of several leading orchestras, including the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, and caused a stir at the BBC Proms in 2022 with his re-established orchestra, the Sinfonia of London. He will be performing at the BBC Proms on Saturday 16 July with the Sinfonia of London in a program of British music.

Wilson's musical genius was evident from a young age. As a Tyneside schoolboy, he developed a love for music and movie soundtracks, which he pursued with the help of his musical mother. He taught himself to play the piano and later took up percussion at school. He went on to study Music A level at Newcastle College, where he cut his teeth as a conductor, putting together and conducting various ensembles, including a 96-piece orchestra for a concert version of West Side Story.

At the Royal College of Music, Wilson trained as a percussionist before moving on to study composition and conducting. He won the college's most prestigious award, the Tagore Gold Medal, for his outstanding work.
